Contra (コントラ, stylized as 魂斗羅) is a run-and-gun platformer developed and published by Konami. Originally a coin-operated arcade game, a version of it released on the Nintendo Entertainment System on February 2, 1988. It released on the Family Computer on the 9th of that month, and released as Probotector on Europe's NES on December 28, 1990.
Other versions and ports
Due to the game's success in arcades, it received ports for the Amstrad CPC, ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, MS-DOS, MSX2 and TRS-80 Color Computer home computers, though none were as popular as the 8-bit Nintendo game. The 8-bit Nintendo game was made available as an unlockable, alongside Super Contra, in Contra: Dual Spirits on the Nintendo DS.
