Famiclone

From FamiWiki
The Dendy Junior II, a popular Famiclone in Russia.

A Famiclone or Famicom clone is a type of clone hardware designed to replicate the workings of the Family Computer or Nintendo Entertainment System. The earliest type of clones were nearly one to one copies of the Famicom but later clones starting around the late 90s incorporated the hardware onto one chip, known as Nintendo-on-a-chip (NOAC). Most Famiclones originate in China, but many have been released worldwide. In 2003, various patents on the Famicom and NES hardware expired which no longer made Famiclone hardware illegal and resulted in many different types of consoles that are still being produced to this day by various manufacturers.[Source?]
